Barre Classes: Trend Versus Fad

Karlea Winstead

In recent years, a new workout style has come to the forefront for fitness enthusiasts across the United States. This workout style is titled "barre".

What is Barre?

Barre is a hybrid workout class, combining pilates, yoga and strength-training to tone and lengthen a person's muscles. This workout is derived from ballet movements, but created with the intention of a person with any level of ballet experience to be successful and see results. Barre classes typically last 45 minutes to an hour and work each muscle group, so a person can expect to feel fatigued after even one class.

Trends Versus Fads

Fitness trends are changes in the behavior of people and their perspectives as it relates to fitness, including equipment, styles of workouts and apparel. Trends are long-lasting, meaning fitness trends often stay around for years and change the landscape of the fitness industry. On the other hand, a fitness fad is a popular activity or style that is short-lived. Fads quickly fade out and do not change the fitness industry as a whole.

Barre in the Fitness Industry

Even though barre is a new style of working out as compared to traditional running or heavy weightlifting, it would be considered a trend. Barre emerged about five years ago and has gained popularity each year. It has altered the landscape of the fitness industry through introducing an effective full-body, low impact and high intensity alternative to high impact workouts. With the current trend of a more health-conscious society, barre has become a common workout style for many people across every age group. The workout allows for modifications within each exercise, which is important for making each individual feel as though he or she has had a successful workout. Barre is a results-driven workout and the desire for results never goes out of style.
